15th March 2024
The psychology department of the SNDT Women’s University, Churchgate, in association with BJ Wadia Hospital, arranged an interactive session on March 15, 2024, to address the issues raised by anemia and thalassemia. Experts from various fields convened at the event, led by Drs. Nilesh Thakre and Sangeeta Mudaliar, to discuss these conditions.
Dr. Mudaliar opened the session by giving a thorough overview of anemia and thalassemia, outlining the causes of each condition as well as the various screening techniques. Ms. Vrushali went into great detail about thalassemia, explaining its classifications, clinical diagnosis, and the care that afflicted children need. She emphasized Cyprus’s success story, where strict screening policies resulted in a notable drop in the number of Thalassemic births. Miss Vrushali went on to discuss anemia in more detail, outlining its causes and types, such as megaloblastic anemia and iron deficiency.
Miss Ritika spoke eloquently about the psychosocial effects of anemia and thalassemia. She talked about the emotional toll that these conditions have on people, and how anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are some of the symptoms. She also emphasized the difficulties carers encounter, such as relationship strain and social stigma. Miss Ritika emphasized the significance of treating the psychological side of these conditions to ensure holistic care, drawing on research studies.
Attendees participated in an interactive discussion during the session, asking panelists questions and getting clarifications. The sharing of concepts and data deepened our understanding of anemia and thalassemia and emphasized the value of early intervention in treatment and prevention.
A heartfelt vote of gratitude was held to thank the speakers, organizers, and attendees for their invaluable contributions as the session came to a close. In conclusion, the Department of Psychology, SNDT WU and BJ Wadia Hospital’s joint project offered a forum for the exchange of information and the raising of awareness about anemia and thalassemia. The session emphasized the importance of comprehensive care and support systems in improving the well-being of individuals and families affected by these disorders by addressing the psychosocial aspects of these conditions.
